Environment-Urban Black Bear Ecology in Aspen Colorado

February 12, 2008

Naturalist Nights Series by The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies

Aspen Colorado Black BearThe summer of 2007 was one of the worst years for bear-human conflicts that wildlife managers in the Roaring Fork Valley and, in particular, Aspen can remember. In fact, bear-human conflicts have been increasing throughout the West, and there is a growing need to better understand bear behavior in urban environments. This presentation will outline the ongoing inter-agency urban bear ecology study in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley . Goals are to gain knowledge about resource selection and movement behavior of bears in town and to assess the effectiveness of management strategies in reducing bear-human conflicts. Sharon will present preliminary data collected on Aspen bears from 2005-2007 including movement and activity pattern behaviors observed so far.
