Cross Country Ski Tours and Lessons-Aspen Snowmass Colorado

January 22, 2008

Backcountry ski tour from Snowmass to ButtermilkAspen Highlands’ Ski Pros Ron Rash and Tim Shortell purchased Aspen Alpine Guides this past summer. Both have guided for A.A.G. for many years and are now excited about their new roles as guide/owners.

Starting this winter A.A.G. will be offering a backcountry ski tour from Snowmass to Buttermilk. The tour starts from the summit of Burnt Mountain, descends 3,000 feet in seven miles, and finishes at the base of Buttermilk Ski area. The route includes a mild descent of the eastern ridge of Burnt Mountain, the open terrain of the Sugar Bowls, and a gentle slope through aspen glades to the Government Trail. This is a challenging tour with a short amount of uphill travel. The emphasis is on enjoying the serenity of the backcountry. It is not recommended for those primarily interested in making turns.

The route is best suited for clients on either telemark or randonee equipment, but can be traveled using standard alpine equipment by highly skilled skiers willing to sidestep up some short areas. Although the intended route has very low avalanche concerns, participants will be issued beacons and shovels and given introductory instruction in their use.

All AAG guides have avalanche and rescue training as well as backcountry medical certification.

The cost of this tour is $225.00 for 1-3 guests, each additional person is $75.00. Pros with their clients will be guests of AAG and will not be charged. This tour takes place out of the Ski Company operating area, and therefore Pros on this tour will not be covered by worker’s compensation.
