Dr. Greg Florant To Be Fit and Fat: Consequences of Obesity in Mammalian Hibernators
The experiments performed in my laboratory are designed to investigate the physiological and biochemical mechanisms that are involved in regulating food intake and energy balance in mammals. We believe this is an extremely important question given the problems associated with over eating and obesity in our society. The questions we address are: what regulates food intake and body mass in mammals that hibernate? Are specific hormones involved in the regulation of fasting? The results of our investigations will hopefully have a broad impact by adding new basic knowledge to our current understanding of how animals regulate their body mass.

Safeguarding Clean Air: Taking on the Threat of Rampant Oil and Gas Drilling
Presented by Jeremy Nichols
February 28, 7:30 AM, Free to the public!
Call us for more information: 925-5756
Clean air is a hallmark of Colorado, yet air pollution from rampant oil and gas drilling is taking its toll on our health, our wildlands, our communities, and even our climate. However, things are changing for the better. We’ll take a look at how more drilling has fueled unprecedented action for clean air in Colorado, and how crisis is fueling opportunity and hope. Most importantly, we’ll take a look at how citizens are winning.
Environment-Urban Black Bear Ecology in Aspen Colorado
February 12, 2008
Naturalist Nights Series by The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies
The summer of 2007 was one of the worst years for bear-human conflicts that wildlife managers in the Roaring Fork Valley and, in particular, Aspen can remember. In fact, bear-human conflicts have been increasing throughout the West, and there is a growing need to better understand bear behavior in urban environments. This presentation will outline the ongoing inter-agency urban bear ecology study in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley . Goals are to gain knowledge about resource selection and movement behavior of bears in town and to assess the effectiveness of management strategies in reducing bear-human conflicts. Sharon will present preliminary data collected on Aspen bears from 2005-2007 including movement and activity pattern behaviors observed so far.
