ASPEN, COLORADO — On Saturday, September 29, 2007, the Aspen Art Museum will participate in “Museum Day,” presented by Smithsonian magazine and Hyundai Motor America. Museum Day is a day when museums and cultural institutions nationwide open their doors free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors. Celebrating culture, learning and knowledge, Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine, and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, DC-based facilities. This year’s Museum Day is also supported by CITGO Petroleum Corporation and, for the third consecutive year, TIAA-CREF.
Of the museum’s participation in the cooperative venture, Aspen Art Museum Director and Chief Curator Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson, states: “To be included in a network of cultural venues invested in giving free access to our institutions on Museum Day/September 29 sends a message that we are all committed to the larger discussion of engaging the public with the diversity of ideas each of us present. Be they artistic, scientific, historical, or some combination of each, the opportunity to enrich dialogue between the public and Museum Day institutions is a truly valuable enterprise. We here at the Aspen Art Museum are proud to be participating.”
Founded in 1979, the Aspen Art Museum is a non-collecting museum for contemporary art, located in the historic mountain community of Aspen, Colorado. Currently, the AAM is proud to present Israeli painter Avner Ben-Gal’s debut U.S. museum solo exhibition Sudden Poverty (Lower Gallery), and the nine-artist international exhibition Sculptors Drawing, featuring Matthew Barney, Anne Chu, Keith Edmier, Terisita Fernández, Jorge Pardo, Tobias Rehberger, Thomas Scheibitz, Katy Schimert, and Ricky Swallow (Upper Gallery). Both exhibitions are on view through October 14. The AAM is open year-round, offering free public lectures and guided tours of museum exhibitions, private collection tours, international members’ art trips, art outreach programs in regional schools, and other community-based programming.
Last year, approximately 30,000 people attended Museum Day. Forty-nine states were represented by 448 participating museums, including 55 Smithsonian affiliates.
Attendees must present Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day Admission Card to gain free entry to participating institutions. The Museum Day Admission Card is available in the September issue of Smithsonian magazine and a downloadable version is available on the Museum Day website at www.smithsonian.com/museumdaycard. The general public is welcome to participate by going to the Smithsonian.com website and downloading the Museum Day Admission Card. Listings and links to other participating museums’ and sponsors’ sites can be found at www.smithsonian.com/museumday.
