Aspen-Snowmass Family Activities

December 23, 2007

If you’re heading to Colorado to ski this winter, chances are you won’t be too far from Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in historic Glenwood Springs - within an hour of Vail, Beaver Creak, Sunlight, Snowmass and Aspen, and two hours of Breckenridge, Winter Park, Powderhorn, Steamboat, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Ski Cooper and SolVista - this mountain-top destination makes a memorable addition to the traditional ski trip.

“Our proximity to so many ski areas, combined with our setting and attractions, makes this a perfect way to round out a winter vacation,” said Steve Beckley, who owns Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park with his wife Jeanne. “The caves remain a constant 52 degrees, and the crowds are a bit thinner this time of year, so it’s really a great time to visit.”

Starting on the floor of the Roaring Fork Valley near the Colorado River, the Adventure Park’s Iron Mountain Tramway carries visitors 4,300 feet up the side of Iron Mountain in fully enclosed gondolas, providing panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. At the top, visitors can tour Glenwood Caverns and Historic Fairy Caves, recognized as offering one of the leading family cave tours in the country, then hop on the Canyon Flyer - the only alpine coaster in Colorado - with individual cars on tracks that race through the trees and down the mountainside.

“In our experience, there are usually a couple of folks in each group of winter travelers that don’t ski,” Beckley added. “They’ve found the Adventure Park to be an enjoyable day trip since they’re able to take a scenic gondola ride up and down the mountain, enjoy lunch by the fire, and pick up some souvenirs in our gift shop.”

The Lookout Grille serves lunch with incredible views of the Roaring Fork Valley and Colorado River. The menu includes soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, nachos, quesadillas and more. Kids’ meals are just $4.95.

This winter, the Adventure Park is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. During the holidays, the Park will extend its hours from Dec. 20 through Jan. 6, and will be open daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Families are invited to a special Lunch with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 22. The Park will be closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.

The Adventure Park offers discounts for groups of 20 or more, and is a memorable setting for special events. Visit glenwoodcaverns.com for more information. To learn more about Glenwood Springs or find lodging in the area, log on to visitglenwood.com
