Aspen Art Museum-Artist Submission Request

November 23, 2007

The Aspen Art Museum’s Young Curators of the Roaring Fork (YCRF) invite young artists between the ages of 13 and 21 to submit artwork in their choice of media for inclusion in the group’s forthcoming spring 2008 exhibition, Wasted. The exhibition debuts with a free public reception at the Aspen Art Museum on April 25, 2008, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., and will be on view in the museum’s Upper Gallery from April 25 – May 11, 2008.

The theme of the Wasted exhibition examines ideas of waste and reuse. In a curatorial statement drafted by the YCRF, the group explains: “Our society is accustomed to the convenience of disposability; items are used once and casually thrown away, creating countless lost opportunities to reuse and repurpose. In a culture characterized by abundance, ideas, lives, and opportunities are often wasted as well—not just objects. This exhibition is about what is thrown away by the world; what is ignored or shoved in a corner and deemed valueless. We are asking young artists to consider the many interpretations of the concept of waste and to experiment with the idea of reuse in both physical and philosophical terms—to consider their environment with a holistic view that includes people, places, and concepts, along with physical things.”

In order to be considered for inclusion, artists should submit digital image(s) of their artwork(s) along with a completed submission form to AAM Education and Public Programs Manager Morley McBride at: mmcbride@aspenartmuseum.org. Submission forms and other details can be found at: www.aspenartmuseum.org (under Learn tab, Young Curators). Submissions are due by 5:00 p.m., February 1, 2008.

Slides, photographs or videos of artwork can also be sent to the Aspen Art Museum, 590 North Mill Street, Aspen, Colorado, 81611. Only documentation of artwork should be submitted; no actual artwork will be accepted.
