The Aspen Institute-Speaking to the Future Series

October 13, 2008

Lee Bycel, executive director of the Western Region of American Jewish World ServiceThe Aspen Institute is pleased to announce the first speaker of the 2008-2009 Speaking to the Future Series. This year’s series will kick off on October 22, 2008 with Lee Bycel, executive director of the Western Region of American Jewish World Service, an organization that works to alleviate poverty, hunger, and disease in the developing world.

Formerly, Bycel served as Senior Advisor to the Global Strategy of International Medical Corps and he has recently taken trips to Darfur, Chad, and Rwanda to investigate conditions in the developing world. Bycel was also last year’s Aspen High School graduation speaker and moderates the Aspen Seminar as well as the High School and Community Great Ideas Seminar.

The Speaking to the Future Series features speakers who are affiliated with the Institute. They will share insights on their work as well as their perspectives on the future. “The series has been really popular among students and teachers. Students ask excellent questions and the speakers enjoy interacting with high school students,” explained Cristal Logan, director of Community Programs for the Institute. “The perspectives of the students are pragmatic and insightful.”

The event will take place during the high school’s lunch period. Lunch will be served on a first come first served basis. The next event in the Series will take place on December 12th and will feature Countess Simonetta Brandolini d’Adda. D’Adda lives in Florence, Italy and is CEO of The Best in Italy, Inc. She is also the founder of Friends of Florence, an organization dedicated to the preservation of art works in Florence and Tuscany. The Foundation’s first major project, the complete restoration of the Loggia dei Lanzi, was celebrated in June 2002. Since then, Friends of Florence has restored the twenty two major paintings flanking Michelangelo’s “David” in the Galleria dell’ Accademia. The Foundation has also funded the diagnostic analysis of this historic masterpiece and is responsible for creating a website and a DVD detailing the restoration process of the “David” in celebration of its 500th anniversary.

Past speakers in the Series include Pulitzer Prize–winning author Martin J. Sherwin, workshop leader Dr. David Bisno, energy and oil economist Dr. Philip Verleger, Chairman of the Institute Board of Trustees Bill Mayer, and Institute President and CEO Walter Isaacson.

The Series takes place in the Seminar Room at Aspen High School, from 11:40 AM to12:10 PM, and will be filmed and aired by Grassroots Television, Channel 12. For more information please call (970) 544-7929.

The Aspen Institute mission is twofold: to foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues. The Aspen Institute does this primarily in four ways: seminars, young-leader fellowships around the globe, policy programs and public conferences and events. The Institute is based in Washington, DC, Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and has an international network of partners

Aspen Global Change Institute-What Will It Take to Feed the World Sustainably

October 13, 2008

Dr. Rosamond Lee NaylorThe Aspen Global Change Institute will present a free public lecture, “What Will It Take to Feed
the World Sustainably?”, on Friday October 24th at 6:00pm at the Given Institute Lecture Hall,
100 East Francis Street in Aspen. The lecture will be given by Dr. Rosamond Lee Naylor, William
Wrigley Senior Fellow and Director of the Program on Food Security and the Environment at
Stanford University.

Feeding a world of over 6.5 billion people is already taxing the global resource base and degrading
environmental quality in many regions. With the world’s population growing toward 9 billion—coupled
with rising incomes, expanding meat consumption, and increased allocation of cropland for biofuels—
the goals of meeting basic food needs, reducing global hunger, and preserving the health of the planet
will become ever more challenging. Dr. Naylor will examine this challenge in the context of key
countries, food-feed-fuel connections, and increased instability in commodity and financial markets.
She will challenge the audience to think about what it will take to feed the world sustainably from the
perspective of farmers, consumers, private enterprises, and the policy community.

Dr. Naylor is an Aspen High School graduate (class of ’76) and received her B.A. in Economics and
Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado, her M.Sc. in Economics from the London
School of Economics, and her Ph.D. in applied economics from Stanford University. Her research
focuses on the environmental and equity dimensions of intensive food production at local to global
scales.

Friday’s lecture is free and open to the public. A wine and cheese reception will

follow. For more information please visit www.agci.org or call (970) 925-7376.

Aspen Historical Society’s “Halloween Haunted History Party” -The first annual Halloween Haunted History Event for kids and adults. The Aspen Historical Society will be the scene of the crime on Thursday and Friday evenings, October 30th and 31st, when the Wheeler/Stallard Museum (corner of 6th and Bleeker in Aspen) is transformed into a Haunted House of Mysterious History, showcasing little known haunted features of the 1888 Queen Victorian mansion. The Haunted House will be open from 7:00 to 9:30 pm both nights and is appropriate for both children (though we suggest 5 years or older) and adults. Cost is $5 per person or $15 per family and proceeds will go to support future children’s programming at the Society.

While rumors have been circulating for years that the museum was once occupied by the legendary Addams Family, the tales have never been proven true. Nonetheless, with the help of haunted house “douser” Greg Didier the Wheeler/Stallard Museum’s haunted past is being coaxed out of the old house for the two nights that end the month of October. The result is amazing: for these two nights the museum will take on the persona of 120 years of bizarre occurrences, paranormal incidents and extra-dimensional episodes that are hard to explain. Attendees should expect the unexpected and be prepared to be scared – it is not recommended for the nervous or timid or those young, impressionable types under 5 years old. The word around the Society is “Enter at your own risk!”

For more information visit the Aspen Historical WebSite or call 970-925-3721.

Anderson Ranch at the Aspen Art Museum

October 5, 2008

Anderson Ranch Arts Center
Thursday, October 30 - Sunday, December 07

In an historic collaborative effort, the Aspen Art Museum and Anderson Ranch Arts Center will present an exhibition at the museum that highlights the artistic accomplishments of Anderson Ranch, its history of art-making, and it’s importance to the local community.

ARAC@AAM: Anderson Ranch at the Aspen Art Museum has been organized from over 250 submissions received from an open call to all former artists-in-residence, workshop faculty, visiting artists and critics, and Anderson Ranch staff. Dan Cameron, the Director of Visual Arts at the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans; Laura Hoptman, the Senior Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York; and Lauri Firstenberg, Director/Curator of LA ART in Los Angeles, worked together to jury and curate the exhibition and select the objects that will be on view. The resulting exhibition promises to bring together works that are as rich and diverse as Anderson Ranch’s artistic legacy.
